Pros talking
I really love working with Rubio Monocoat and have done so for 15 years now. I enjoy the big variety of colours I can offer my clients. Both for classic and modern stairs.
Functionally, in terms of installation, it goes very smoothly and it’s high quality. Most importantly is the easy repairs afterwards. It is very easy to apply. With stairs, you always walk in the same place. If you go back after 10 years, it is easy to touch up.
Thanks to our many years of experience with Rubio Monocoat, the wood oil holds no secrets for us. It is a highly reliable partner that thinks along with us and is indispensable for restoration work.
Using the B component shortens the drying time and means that the various areas are inaccessible for other work for less time.
The ease of maintenance is also a major advantage.
Rubio Monocoat is the only product we have found that will give us the beautiful matte finish we desire, whether aged or modern, while still providing excellent durability and no off gassing. It’s our go-to floor finish.
In one sentence: very user-friendly and natural result - totally what we wanted!
Our client chose reclaimed wood floors and wanted "a matte, natural, but aged look." She wanted to feel the texture in the wood, so we knew a hard wax oil was in order. We created several samples with various custom blends of Rubio Monocoat colours. It was exactly what she wanted, and the floors turned out to be beautiful, along with the rest of the home.

FAQs
How should I sand a staircase before treating it with Rubio Monocoat interior wood oil?
When sanding a staircase, always make sure that you sand the surface equally to get an even colour result.
The sanding grit depends on whether it's a new staircase or a renovation project.
New staircase:
Sand the surface scratch-free and finish with 100 or 120 grit.
Renovation:
Eliminate all the remains of the previous treatments by sanding with a coarse grit first. Finish with a 100 or 120 grit before applying the oil.
Can I easily oil the staircase at the site or should I do this in advance in the woodshop?
With Rubio Monocoat, you can choose the workflow that fits your schedule and site conditions best. Either pre-oil your wood in the shop and install it already protected, or apply the wood oil on-site. Because our molecular binding technology works the same way regardless of the environment, both ways are giving you the high quality you want.
The typical downsides of on-site finishing simply don't apply here. Since the wood oil is 0% VOC, it is completely safe for you and the homeowners, with no negative impact on indoor air quality. Thanks to the fast drying times provided by the B-component, you can already walk on the staircase (with socks) after just 24 - 36 hours. Best of all, because no intermediate sanding is required between layers, there is no extra dust created in your living space.
Is there an easy way to repair the walklines on staircases?
Because we naturally follow the same path up and down, staircases experience concentrated wear in the exact same spot (usually right in the center of the tread). After about 10 years of daily use, those "walklines" may begin to look a bit dull or worn compared to the edges of the steps.
The beauty of the Rubio Monocoat system is that you don’t need to sand the entire staircase down to bare wood to fix this. Because our oil binds molecularly with the wood fibers, you can perform a localised repair without leaving overlapping marks or visible "patches."
