Which colour of Oil Plus 2C should I use for the most natural possible result on my wood?

Choosing the right colour for your wood finishing product can be a difficult process. Some popular colours of the Oil Plus 2C are Pure, White 5% and Natural. However, not all three colours will keep your wood as natural as possible. We will give you some tips below to help you make your choice, but remember that it is always best to test your colour on a wood sample. This really gives you the best idea of what your colour will look like on your wood.

The colour Pure contains no pigment, but is therefore not transparent. After all, the oil is made from linseed and therefore also contains a natural colour that will enrich/darken the wood

Do you want to avoid this enriching effect and stay closer to the natural colour of the wood? Then a colour with pigment will come closer to the desired result. The Natural colour contains a creamy whitish/yellowish pigment that counteracts the natural darkening of white oak. The colour White 5% will also give a more natural result.

Be careful with other types of wood. Not every colour will produce the same result with every type of wood. For example, with red oak it is better to use the PreColour Neutral White to neutralise the pink/red tones in combination with the Oil Plus 2C White 5%. Because walnut in itself is a dark type of wood, the Pure colour will give the desired result here. You get a slight darkening here, but this is often a desired effect.

Can I use Oil Plus 2C over our existing finish and is one layer of Oil Plus 2C sufficient?

No, Oil Plus 2C must come into contact with raw cellulose in order to properly work and bond with the wood fibres. This means that all previous treatments should be removed by sanding before applying Oil Plus 2C. And since the wood doesn't absorb any surplus product once the fibres are bonded with the oil, this makes a second layer superfluous.

Is Accelerator (Comp. B) required for Oil Plus 2C?

We advise you to add Accelerator in every circumstance. Not only will the oil dry much faster, it will also cure better and faster. The curing process is very important in order to have a strong end result. You can never obtain the same strong protection, wear-, water- and heat resistance without Accelerator.

What’s the difference between DuroGrit & WoodCream?

DuroGrit and WoodCream differ in several key ways, especially when it comes to the type of surfaces they’re suited for and the final look and feel they provide.

WoodCream is a wax-based, hydrophobic cream specifically designed for vertical wood surfaces such as cladding, fences, windows and doors. It colours and protects the wood and can be applied in one or multiple layers. Its finish is more opaque than DuroGrit, making it ideal for changing the original colour of the wood or for renovation projects where sanding back to bare wood isn’t possible. WoodCream is also extremely water-repellent and has a self-cleaning effect, which significantly reduces maintenance.

DuroGrit, on the other hand, is a water-based oil fortified with wood fibers, developed to maintain the wood’s original colour and prevent greying. It delivers a very transparent, matte finish that preserves the natural look and feel of the wood. In addition to strong UV resistance, DuroGrit also offers excellent wear resistance, making it suitable not only for vertical applications but also for horizontal surfaces such as terraces and outdoor furniture.

Can we apply a second layer of DuroGrit for an even better protection or more intense colour?

DuroGrit is a one layer product. When two or more coats are applied, the UV protection will be improved but the system will also become more film-forming. This might result in typical problems of film-forming systems such as flaking/peeling. In addition, the curing time will also be prolonged.

However, in exceptional cases, e.g. very grey/weathered wood, a second layer might be necessary for aesthetic reasons. The first layer will act as a primer, but due to the high and inequal absorption of the wood, a second layer will provide a more uniform colour result. In these cases we also advise diluting the DuroGrit with 20% of water. The risk of building up a thick film-forming layer here is low, because a lot of the product is absorbed into the weathered wood.

How many layers of WoodCream do you need to apply?

WoodCream can be applied in 1 or 2 layers depending on the look you want. A second layer can be applied after at least 3 hours and within 24 hours after the first layer.

In case of renovation on older non-Rubio Monocoat products we always advise to apply two layers to avoid gloss differences between raw wood and patches where the old coating was still present.

We also advise to always dilute WoodCream with WoodCream Softener for the second layer.

Do I need to sand new wood too?

Yes, for both interior and exterior purposes it is strongly recommended to sand new wood.

Interior

It is strongly recommended that you also sand new wood. This is necessary to open up the wood pores sufficiently so that enough oil can penetrate the wood and you get a nice even colouring. Interior wood can be lightly sanded with screening net 100 (floors or stairs) or screening net 120 to 150 (furniture, tables, etc.).

Exterior

Also with exterior wood, the pores must be sufficiently open to obtain good adhesion of the product. For softwood or thermowood, Exterior Wood Cleaner is usually sufficient, but for hardwood it is better to sand with screening net 80 beforehand.
